The music school places campers into rock bands as they spend they work with a music professional recording a CD and rehearsing for an end-of-session concert. Campers will receive lessons on their instrument of choice as well as other instruments in the band (guitar, bass, drums and piano). The St. Louis Summer Camp also includes workshops in singing, songwriting, improvisation and percussion.
The camp is offered for kids ages 7 to 18 (entering second grade or older), but the music school also offers a KidzRock summer camp for younger campers (ages 4-7) through COCA. Sessions start May 23, 2016.
Students will be divided by age and skill level into different bands. Each band will create their musical direction with their band director as they prepare to record a CD and perform in a concert. The first week of camp is devoted to rehearsing and recording. The second week of camp is devoted to preparing for the camp concert in the schools performance center.
Campers who are interested in taking our optional private lessons will be able to sign up for 30 minute lessons at the end of camp with their instructor of choice.
Campers will break off into small groups for workshops in singing, songwriting, improvisation and percussion. In the vocal workshop campers will learn about singing lead and harmony. The songwriting workshop focuses on melody writing and song lyrics. In music improvisation, campers will learn about how play in a jam session and different styles of improvisation. The percussion workshop is a camp favorite that includes drum circle playing and orchestration in a large percussion ensemble.
Each day campers will take a break from the music for some outdoor sports and activities.
Camp tuition includes Rock School t-shirt, earplugs, guitar picks and instrument rentals.
